Description

Walden University’s nontraditional undergraduate population is unique. Many are underrepresented, first-generation students working multiple jobs and caring for family members. They are often academically inexperienced, unfamiliar with technical matters, and unskilled at managing their time effectively. These adults have unique needs and challenges, particularly during their first term as they add the demands of college classes to their already busy lives, which can be aggravated by COVID-19–related distress. A compassionate teaching philosophy that does not compromise excellence is needed to help them transition into student-practitioners. Discussion on compassionate teaching and assessment will be accompanied by strategies for the online classroom.

Faculty Bio

Gabriela Johnson

Denice "Gaby" Johnson is a full-time faculty in the Center for General Education. She has been teaching at Walden University since 2009. She has a B.A. in Communication Education from MidAmerica Nazarene University and an M.A. in Communication Studies from the University of Kansas. Mrs. Johnson's area of expertise is communication theory and skills.
