Description

In this webinar, we will examine (1) the main terminology and modern assessment methods of epidemics (e.g., genomic sequencing and reproduction number of a pathogen, testing, tracing), (2) the main strategies to address infectious diseases (i.e., mitigation, elimination), and (3) the best practices and measures of national and international reactions to address an emerging disease, including short- and long-term measures to reduce contacts and prevent hospital saturation, active surveillance, quick development of effective vaccines and treatments that should be produced and distributed equally and globally, etc. The ultimate goal of these public health actions should and could be to save as many lives as possible and to return to pre-epidemic life.

Describe lessons learned and failures in controlling local epidemics and pandemics, as well as the best short- and long-term public health practices, strategies, and measures to contain disease outbreaks locally and globally in a timely manner.

Faculty Bio

Vasileios Margaritis

Vasileios Margaritis holds a PhD (2010), a MSc (2006) in Community Dentistry, and a Bachelor degree in Dentistry (1999) from the Dental School of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He has also attended short courses concerning Epidemiology and Qualitative Research at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and at University of Oxford, respectively. He began as a part-time (April 2012) and full time (October 2015) faculty member at Walden University in the School of Health Professions, DrPH and PhD in Public Health Programs. In 2019 he was promoted to the Senior Core Faculty position. He also voluntarily works as Visiting Lecturer and Researcher at Dental School of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens since 2006.

He teaches or has taught Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Community and Preventive Dentistry. His recent interests include Public Health, Modern Epidemiology (e.g. Propensity Score Methodology and Inverse Probability Weighting), Community Health Promotion and Education, Curriculum Development and Mixed Methods Research Techniques. He has a track record of relevant international and national publications. Dr. Margaritis has worked as a researcher in community-based research settings in a variety of areas including oral epidemiology and intellectually disabled persons and has served as methodology/statistics expert in many of those projects. He currently serves as Senior Core Faculty, Dissertation Mentor, and University Research Reviewer in DrPH and PhD in Public Health Programs, College of Health Professions, Walden University.
