Description

Over 200 different types of sexually transmitted diseases/sexually transmitted infections (STDs/STIs) exist worldwide, and more than 1 million STDs/STIs are acquired every day. In the United States, 20 million new cases of STDs/STIs are acquired each year, accounting for $16 billion in healthcare costs. In the United States, 50% of young people will acquire an STD or STI by the age of 25.

All STDs/STIs have an incubation period. Many STDs/STIs do not have any signs or symptoms. Others do have signs and symptoms, but the person ignores them. Some STDs/STIs can go into latency and tertiary stages, and the signs and symptoms disappear. The STD/STI does not go away, and the infected person can still transmit the STD/STI to other sexual partners and endure lifetime consequences. This session will cover the 25 most common STDs/STIs found in the United States population. The incubation periods, signs, symptoms, and treatments will be discussed.

The session will conclude with the sharing of successful evidence-based education and prevention efforts that health educators can use in educating and helping to prevent their students from acquiring an STD/STI.

Expiration Date: 06-16-2023
